The Vintage Reel 1983-1990

frame grabs from films as director of photography..."American made," Ball of Wax," "Tattered Angel,"

The vintage reel consists of commercials shot in the 1980s.  The commercials on this reel were shot on 35mm film on an Arriflex BL IV and transferred to standard definition video 640x480 on a rank cintel, producing the best available imagery of that time period, a far cry from today's capabilities regarding image quality.

Panasonic camera demo NAB 2010

This is demo footage created for the release of a new Panasonic camera at the 2010 NAB show. Greenscreen is used to illustrate how well the camera resolves fine detail and color, thus making matte generation effective. Notice that even though the talent is wearing green, the camera differentiated the green so well, that only the screen keyed out and not the foreground. Also note the keying of the fine hairs in the close-ups. The shots are longer than usual for most music videos to allow them to be studied. The greenscreen images consist of 5 to 6 layers.  Slomotion was achieved in combination with lip synch by recording the audio at 2x speed for playback and shooting at 48fps rather than 24. The actress had to sing at twice speed for filming.

Trailer for "The Black Dove" 2011

The black dove was shot in september of 2010 on the red one wth a full crew.  I was the writer, producer, director, cinematographer and editor, which allowed me to make the film on a SAG ultra low budget.  The film starred John Savage, Abby Wathen, sean Young, Red West, David Dellarocco and lou beatty, Jr.  and was distributed by Indican pictures and lionsgate.

American Made

This short film was written and directed by Andrew Will. I was the Director of Photography.  shot on an Indian reservation in Yuma Arizona where several movies had previously shot (scenes from the Scorpion King and one of the Rambo films as well as others), The floor of the small valley where we did most of our shooting was littered with brass shell casings, that we later learned were expended by our armorer on previous films.

The location must have been very popular and was the only place in the United States that truly looked like Afghanistan. I think we produced this around 2003 and one of the highlights was working with, and getting to know, Navid Negahban who has enjoyed a rich career, most remembered for his role in "Homeland" and in the movie "Twelve Strong." Andrew's brother, Tim, created the storyboards as well as the live effects, all on a shoestring budget. The crew was local, a great bunch of guys and all in all, despite the 110-degree heat, this was a fun experience for everybody.

The Go-See

This is the demo reel made to finance the go-see, a screenplay written by Michael Caporale.  It was shot on 35mm film and transferred to standard def video (640x480) in the eighties, long before the image quality we enjoy today was possible.

Making "The Black Dove"

A behind the scenes look at how I made a low budget feature film in twenty days in october of 2010 in cincinnati ohio.

Finis

Established in 1989, Finis was ahead of its time as the first all-digital post production facility in the midwest. Caporale was added by Avid to be one of only seven beta test sites for their groundbreaking Apple macIntosh based random access edit system. His contributions to the interface helped make Avid the system it is today.
